BIPOC Home and Business Ownership Community Kickoff – 10/25/24

Join the public launch of the BIPOC Home and Business Ownership (BHBO) project to support Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in putting down roots in the Upper Valley. The BHBO Community Kick-Off will be a morning of networking, resource sharing, solutions-centered brainstorming, for people involved in the homeownership process, local businesses, and social well-being of BIPOC community members. Free admission, including breakfast! The BHBO project emerged in response to the broadly recognized need for the Upper Valley to attract and retain workers and full-time residents to keep its economy vibrant. Many new arrivals are discouraged by the difficulty of finding a home and building a community. This is particularly true for BIPOC community members who – due to the historic marginalization of BIPOC community members and the Upper Valley’s history as a predominantly White area – face unique difficulties in maneuvering the job market, securing housing, establishing businesses, accessing cultural goods, and, above all, experiencing a sense of inclusion and belonging. The BHBO project is a joint endeavor by community members Conicia “CJ” Jackson and Julius Turner, Vital Communities, and Mascoma Bank.

Living in Downtown puts you in the heart of the city with a unique level of convenience. Everything is at your fingertips, and you can easily walk to shops, restaurants, and other amenities. You can connect to public transportation, bike or get around on foot, reducing the need for a car. Downtown living is very desirable to residents of all ages for the vibrant nightlife, cultural events, and attractions. Downtowns contribute a high density of economic activity and a concentration of opportunity for a more diverse and inclusive population. But creating new housing units in Downtown districts has challenges, too. Building codes have changed over time, structures and uses may be obsolete, there will be brownfield issues, rising water levels, stormwater concerns and clashes in the neighborhood over traffic and parking. These all weigh on the financial feasibility of Downtown sites and add challenges to office-to-residential conversions.

How are Policymakers Improving Access to Lower-cost Homes? – 4/16/24

Linlin Liang is a principal associate with Pew’s housing policy initiative, providing analysis and research on alternative financial arrangements used to purchase manufactured homes and other low-cost forms of housing. Before coming to Pew, Liang worked for Grameen America to expand access to credit for low-income entrepreneurs and launched Bank On Suncoast’s coalition with United Way Suncoast to connect underserved communities with safe and affordable banking products. Liang holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising from Xiamen University and a master’s in media and information from Michigan State University.  

Rachel Siegel is a senior officer with Pew’s housing policy initiative, conducting original research and analysis on the availability, safety, and affordability of mortgages and on alternative financial arrangements for purchasing manufactured homes and other low-cost forms of housing. She also represented Pew on the Federal Reserve’s Faster Payments Task Force. Before coming to Pew, Siegel worked for Santander Bank and Century Bank, and interned at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Vermont and a master’s in economics from Boston University.
